Be an Assistant
BE AN ASSISTANT
Our community welcomes men and women who choose to come and live in the community and create homes with the people who have disabilities and with the other assistants.
Four core persons (people with disabilities) live in each of our homes. As an assistant you will be part of a team. Teams take time together each week for planning and sharing in order to build supportive relationships which ultimately “carry” the house.
Assistants accompany our core people in their daily activities and at home. Some assistants choose to live in the home; others live out. In addition to a fulfilling, life-giving experience, we offer a great benefit package.
Know that we wait with joy and hope to welcome you to a wonderful adventure in life and growth.
THE ROLE OF AN ASSISTANT
An assistant’s responsibility varies within the context of friendship with the persons who have disabilities. The primary task is to create “home”.
Specific responsibilities may include helping folks with their personal hygiene, teaching new skills like cooking or using public transit, helping to animate prayer times together, accompanying people to medical appointments, going swimming, bowling or to church with a group. And as in any household there will be the usual tasks such as cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking and laundry. In addition, an assistant is expected to attend and contribute to various community meetings and events.
